St. Croix's take on Gaylord and Arlington in an afternoon doubleheader

The St. Croix Base Ball Club traveled to the fine communities of Gaylord and Arlington in the southern reaches of the state of Minnesota to play a match game of ball. The weather was beautiful and the crowds were large as the St. Croix's took on these experienced clubs.

The first match was in the Village of Gaylord where many of the local diamond favorites took the field. The beautifully groomed field, named Walsh Field, was in full flavor this day. One of the home town media gentlemen named Michael Max was also playing in his home town uniform.

The Gaylord Islanders were sent into the field by St. Croix Captain Peterson and the St. Croix's were shutout by the fine defense of the home team. The Gaylord club quickly scored twice in their half of the first with fine hitting, poor fielding and a great home crowd that cheered their every move. At the end of the first inning the score stood at the Islander's 2, the St. Croix's nothing.

The score stayed that way because of some great outfield and infield play by both clubs. The St. Croix's got their hitting shoes on in their half of the sixth when they tallied five aces on some fine hitting by Mr. Leonard, Mr. Cagley and visiting player Mr. "Candy" Tholkes.

The Gaylord club would tally twice in their eighth making the score 5-4 in favor of the visting club. In their ninth, with two hands down and one player on base, local favorite Mr. Max was at the plate to strike. He hit a hot daisy-cutter in the direction of Mr. Sjogren at first base - and with his skilled hands, Sjogren grabbed the ball and touched first base to end the match.

The final score of the contest was the St. Croix's 5 to the Gaylord Islander's 4.

The St. Croix Club then traveled the distance of seven miles to the Village of Arlington. There the St. Croix's would play a tough Arlington Grey's club known throughout the land as one of the strongest clubs in the southern part of the state.

The St. Croix's were sent to bat first by Arlington Captain Grabitske. Although there were several fine hits by the St. Croix's, the Arlington defense allowed no aces to tally. In Arlington's half of the first, two aces crossed the plate at the end of the first inning, Arlington was leading the St. Croix's 2 - 0.

The Grey's would score four more times in their fourth, but the St. Croix's would come back with three in their fifth and another ace in their sixth. But this day was for the Arlington Grey's who hit and ran the bases very well. The Greys scored five aces in their sixth and one more in their eighth to defeat the visiting St. Croix Club 12 to 4.

It was a beautiful day for base ball in southern Minnesota and both communities were very hospitiable to the visiting St. Croix's, offering laughter, food and beverages to the visiting nine.

For the day, the leaders for the St. Croix's were Mr. Cagley and Mr. Leonard both scoring two aces; Mr. Wittrock, Mr. Sjogren, Mr. Tholkes, Mr. Safford, and Mr. Pfundstein all with one ace.

It was hoped that another match would be scheduled for these two communities next year.
