Rhinelander - September 20, 2008
The captain's official game account:
St. Croix's defeat strong Rhinelander Club
The St. Croix Base Ball Club traveled into northeastern Wisconsin to cross bats with the Rhinelander Buckethead Club.
The journey took some of the club to the village of Wausau, Wisconsin where they met former St. Croix member Mr. Keith "Scoop" Uhlig. Upon invitation, he joined the club in the rest of the journey to the contest site.
The St. Croix's won the toss of the coin and elected to strike first. The hardy group of Minnesota vintage base ball players shook off the dust of the distance traveled and started the match by scoring three aces in their first inning. The Bucketheads came right back and tallied twice.
The next inning saw more scoring by both clubs, the St. Croix's tallied twice in their second and the Rhinelander Club tallied three times which made the score after two innings tied at five aces each.
The third inning saw no scoring but the Rhinelander Club pulled ahead in the fourth with one ace. The fifth inning had the St. Croix's scoring three times but the Rhinelander boys tallied three times and retained the lead in the match after five innings by the score of nine to eight.
In the sixth inning the St. Croix's scratched out two aces to bring their total number of aces tallied to ten, but the Rhinelanders pushed one across home base in their half of the seventh inning to tie the score at ten apiece.
The large crowd that had gathered at Pioneer Park was certainly getting a fine match of base ball being played. Some fine hitting as well as outstanding defensive plays by both sides kept the people leaning in anxiously awaiting the next pitch.
The score remanied tied until the top of the ninth inning when the St. Croix's were able to tally once. In the bottom of the inning the Rhinelander Club had a man on each base with two hands down. A slowly hit ball was made back to the St. Croix pitcher and a soft toss to the catcher, Mr. Uhlig, made the final out of the match and the St. Croix's won the very closely played game by the score of 11 to 10.
For the St. Croix's Mr. Ebnet, Mr. Cagley, Mr. Levigne and Mr. Pfundstein all tallied twice with Mr. Nelson, Mr. Liberty and Mr. Uhlig scoring one ace apiece.
