The captain's official game account:

St. Croix's defeat a good Arlington Grey's Club

A beautiful Minnesota summer afternoon saw the St. Croix Base Ball Club and the Arlington Grey Club play a match game of ball at the field in Arlington, Minnesota.

There was a good crowd in the seats watching the match as the St. Croix's won the toss by Umpire Mr. Thein and elected to have the Arlington Club in the field to begin the match. The St. Croix's, having two visiting players on their roster for the match, failed to tally in their firsts while the Arlington Club tallied once for a 1-0 lead after one inning.

The St. Croix's came out with some heaving hitting in their second and tallied three aces but the strong Arlington men scored four in their half to make the score 5-3 in the home clubs favor after two innings.

The scrappy St. Croix's players tallied once in their third and three times in their fourth to take the lead, 7-5. Holding the Arlington Club to no aces in either third or fourth was some fine fielding from the St. Croix's. One particular fine play in the field was made by Mr. Pfundstein in right field making a one handed bound catch without his regular kerchief hanging from his back pocket. A round of "huzzah" was begun by Mr. Ebnet at the rover position.

The Grey's tallied twice in their fifth to again tie the score but the St. Croix's tallied once again in their sixths and took the lead again 8-7.

The battle on the diamond continued when one of the Arlington men hit a clean four base hit and again tied the score at eight a piece. The St. Croix's then opened up their hitting shoes and tallied four times in their eighth and four more in their ninth. The Arlington club tried another comeback in their ninth with two more tallies and men on the bases when the final out was called.

The final score of the match was the St. Croix's 16 and the Arlington Grey's 10.

Festivities followed the match and much talk was about some of the fine plays that were made in the field on both sides.

For the St. Croix's, Mr. Peterson tallied three times; Mr. Wittrock, Mr. Leonard, Mr. Ebnet, Mr. Sjogren, and Mr. Pfundstein all tallied twice and Mr. Ernst, Mr. Arpi and Mr. Cagley had one tally each.

Many thanks go out to Mr. Leonard of St. Peter and Mr. ernst of the Quickstep club for helping hte St. Croix's in the afternoon events. The St. Croix's hope to see them more often at other matches in the future.
