Spring Grove - June 23, 2007
The captain's official game account:
St. Croix's defeat Spring Grove in shortened match
The St. Croix Base Ball Club traveled the dusty back roads of southern Minnesota to play a match game of ball against a strong Spring Grove club during their community celebration.
The field was laid out with some unique topography making it an uphill run to second base. Both clubs had strong nines and that slight problem was compensated for by the athletic ability of both nines.
The St. Croix's led off the match, Spring Grove choosing to play the field first. Down one player, the St. Croix's had their hitting shoes on and tallied eleven times in their first. Many strong clean hits were made by the visiting club as the locals handled themselves well in the field.
The Spring Grove Base Ball Club tallied no aces in their half of the first, but did tally four times on poor fielding and throws by the St. Croix defense. Two more aces were scored the same way in the Spring Grove third, but that was all the local nine could muster against the St. Croix's.
The St. Croix's continued their strong hitting by scoring eight aces in their second, five in their third and two more in their fourth. The clubs ended the match after the fifth inning to partake in more of the community celebration and the food and beverage that was being prepared.
At the end of the five inning match, the St. Croix's had 26 aces to the Spring Grove 6 aces.
The food and festivities were of great entertainment and it is hoped that the St. Croix's will be able to attend the festival again in the future.
For the St. Croix's, Mr. Hammer tallied five aces; Mr. Wittrock, Mr. Cagley and Mr. Pfundstein tallied four each; Mr. Sjogren and Mr. Peterson tallied three aces; Freight Train tallied twice and Mr. Arpi tallied once.

Mr. Wittrock of the St. Croix's waits for the pitch by the Spring Grover hurler as Umpire Mr. Thein looks on.

Mr. Pfundstein of the St. Croix Club reaches third base.

Mr. Arpi stands ready to strike.

Mr. R. C. Vogel, of the Spring Grove Club, waits to strike.

Mr. Hammer tallies another ace for the St. Croix's.
