Murphy's Landing - June 17, 2007
The captain's official game account:
St. Croix's Defeat Quicksteps at Murphy's Landing
The St. Croix's traveled to Murphy's Landing on the Minnesota River near Shakopee to play a match game of ball against the Quicksteps.
The day's weather was one of heat and wind. The field was laid out by both clubs and by the end of the match felt more like the inside of a frying pan than a field of play.
The St. Croix's were first to strike with Mr. Richardson being the umpire for the match. The first striker, Mr. Wittrock, hit a clean one base hit which was followed by Mr. Hammer's hit. By the end of the St. Croix's firsts two aces were tallied.
The Quicksteps, a fine club from around the Minneapolis and St. Paul area, quickly tallied an ace of their own, cutting the St. Croix lead to only one ace.
The next inning, the St. Croix's tallied one time, but three more in their third. They were stymied in their fourth by some outstanding fielding by the Quicksteps, but again tallied three times in their fifth. They would tally one in the sixth and twice more in the ninth to finish off their scoring at 12 aces.
Some bad bounces on the uneven terrain of the field and some very fine fielding and teamwork held the Quicksteps to only one ace for the entire match. The final score of the match was St. Croix's 12 and Quicksteps 1.
Scoring the aces for the St. Croix's were Mr. Hammer with three, Mr. Wittrock, Mr. Sjogren, Mr. Pfundstein, and a game recruit "Steve O," all with two, and Mr. Peterson scoring one ace.
