Hadley Buttermakers defeat the St. Croix's

The St. Croix Base Ball Club set out on a long journey to Currie, Minnesota to play a match game of ball against one of the finest clubs in the state, the Hadley Buttermakers.

Although it was a long and dusty trip, the St. Croix's arrived in the small burgh before the match, which began at 6:30pm. Among the crowd that had gathered to view the match was a former major league pitcher, Mr. Al Worthington. Mr. Worthington's career spanned 14 years in the major leagues with several clubs in both the American and National Leagues. He played for the Minnesota Twins from 1964 to his retirement after the 1969 season. He also pitched for the Fulda Giants in 1950.

Mr. Worthington threw out the first pitch of the match and the Hadley club took the field as the St. Croix's struck first. St. Croix's third baseman Mr. Wittrock reached base safely and eventually tallied an ace, along with Mr. Sjogren as the St. Croix's took an early 2 - 0 lead. The Buttermakers scored twice in their half of the first to tie the score.

Neither club tallied in the second, but the Buttermakers took the lead with three aces in their thrid. The St. Croix's tallied twice in their fourth and the Buttermakers tallied once in their fifth, making the score 4 to 6 in favor of the Hadley club.

In the St. Croix's sixth, they tallied four aces to take the lead 8 - 6, but the Buttermakers came back with three in their sixth and three more in their seventh. Although the St. Croix's made some fine hits in their eight and ninth, they were right at the sure handed Buttermakers defense, and tallied no more aces in the match.

At the end of the match the final score was Hadley Buttermakers 12 and the St. Croix's 8.

Both sides had good hitting and fine fielding. It was agreed that this was one of the best played matches of vintage base ball played in the state of Minnesota so far this year. After the match, the clubs feasted on fine food and listened to stories told by Al Worthington.

For the St. Croix's, Mr. Wittrock and Mr. Hammer tallied twice, and Mr. Sjogren, Mr. Ebnet, Mr. Rose and Mr. Peterson all tallied once
