The captain's official game account:

St. Croix’s fall to Pipestone

The St. Croix Base Ball Club journeyed to the far southwestern corner of the state of Minnesota and crossed bats with the Pipestone Amateur league club captained by Mr. A. Vox. The blustery day in that part of the state made for some interesting and sometimes amusing defensive attempts, most of which for the St. Croix’s allowed the young Pipestone club to take extra bases.

With both Union and Confederate soldiers looking on, the St. Croix’s won the toss and elected to strike first. Showing the skill that the St. Croix’s have in the great American Pastime, the St. Croix’s tallied the first ace of the match after Mr. Ebnet struck a beautiful fair-foul hit down the third base line. This allowed Mr. Hammer to race home and tally one ace for the St. Croix’s. The Pipestone club came to bat in their first, and did some mighty striking but was unable to tally any aces. The score stood at 1 to 0 in favor of the St. Croix’s after the first inning of play.

The second inning saw no scoring but the third inning the Pipestone club were able to score three times on some fine hitting and some poor fielding by the St. Croix’s. The Pipestone club added six more aces in their fourth and one more in their fifth, ending the scoring for the Pipestone nine.

The match was well viewed by the crowd that came to the Village of Pipestone for the weekend activities. The crowd was pleased to see some hard play on both sides and the fine running catches were liberally applauded for both clubs. The final score of the match was the St. Croix

’s 1 and the Pipestone Club 10. It was agreed by both sides the match was closer than the score tells and the two sides look forward to another meeting sometime in the near future.
