St. Croix’s defeat the Bruno Firemen

The St. Croix Base Ball Club journeyed to the village of Bruno on Saturday August 19th to have a match game of Base Ball verses the local nine made up from the fire department.

The day was sunny and the sounds of children laughing and playing were only drowned out when the iron horse would chug on by. The festivities were just beginning as umpire Mr. Thein called the captains of each club together for the toss of the coin. Doing the coin toss was local favorite Ms. Birdie and as Captain Mr. Peterson called for heads, the coin landed on tales. Mr. Clennon, the local nine Captain, had the St. Croix’s strike first, and with that the match was on.

The St. Croix’s were strengthened with the addition of Mr. Sjogren’s father, known to all as “Sugar Daddy.” The senior Mr. Sjogren took the behind position and did very well without any knowledge of the sport. The St. Croix’s were hitting very well in their first by scoring three aces.

The St. Croix’s continue their strong hitting throughout the match, making one ace in their third, three more in their fifth, four in their sixth and score their final three tallies in their seventh. The St. Croix’s also had some fine plays in the field and held the Bruno club scoreless for the match. The final score being the St. Croix’s 14 and the Bruno Firemen nothing.

Mr. Cagley, of the St. Croix’s, tallied four aces in the match and Mr. Ebnet and Mr. Pfundstein both tallied three aces each. The other tallies were made by Mr. Sjogren [junior], Mr. Peterson, Mr. Hammer and Mr. Wittrock.

A revelation was made by Mr. Sjogren junior that he and his fine lady friend, Miss Simonet, have planned to be wed sometime in the near future. The St. Croix’s and the Bruno Club wish them the best in their future lives together and that the union will spring many new members to the club.

After the match the Bruno Club invited the St. Croix

’s to a fine dinner and music was played throughout the community. Again, the Bruno citizens were fine hosts to the St. Croixs and another match is looked forward to next season.
