Northfield: July 29, 2006 The captain's official game account: Silver Stars defeat St. Croix’s in Northfield The Northfield Silver Stars capped a weekend full of music down by the Cannon River by defeating the Saint Croix Base Ball Club 6 to 1. The heat was as hot as the hoofs of Jesse James’ horse and the Chatfield Brass Band played music during the entire match as the St. Croix Base Ball Club traveled to Northfield for the second match between them and the Silver Stars this month. The St. Croix’s won the toss and sent the Silver Stars to strike first. The first two innings saw no scoring but the Silver Stars tallied an ace in their third and another in their fifth. The St. Croix’s were whitewashed until their seventh when Mr. Ebnet made a dandy fair-foul hit that scored Mr. Pfundstein. The big inning for the Silver Stars came in their seventh when Mr. Lovering made a long hit that carried into the street and under some parked carriages that were left there from the cranks watching the contest. Three aces were tallied on that one long hit by the Silver Stars. The match being full of fine fielding, especially by the Northfield nine, made the entire afternoon very exciting even with the extreme heat of a Minnesota summer day. The final score being the St. Croix’s one and the Silver Stars six. |
