Lumberjack Days Vintage Base Ball
For the ninth season the St. Croix Base Ball club of the Washington County Historical Society played baseball according to the rules of 1860 at the Old Athletic Field in Stillwater.
Three matches were played this year starting at 11 am. The first match had the Quicksteps taking on the Afton Red Socks. A back and forth match that saw a lot of fine hitting and fielding, had the Quicksteps come out victorious with an 11 to 8 win.
In the second match, the Afton Red Socks took on the St. Croix Base Ball Club. The St. Croix’s won the toss to begin the match and sent the Red Socks to strike first. The Red Socks made some fine hits and tallied two aces in their first. The St. Croix then struck in their half of the first scoring four aces to take the lead in the match 4 to 2 after just one inning of play.
Afton then tallied one ace in their second and another in their third to tie the match, but in the St. Croix’s third, Mr. Wittrock, Mr. Smith and Mr. Cagley all tallied for the St. Croix’s. The Afton Club tallied once more in the match in their fifth, not enough to hold off the strong hitting St. Croix’s as they tallied 12 more times in the match. The final score being the St. Croix’s 19 and the Afton Red Socks 5.
For the St. Croix’s, Mr. Cagley tallied four aces, Mr. Wittrock, Mr. Smith and Mr. Sjogren all tallied three aces, and Mr. Ebnet tallied twice in the match.
The final match of the afternoon had the St. Croix’s crossing bats with the Quicksteps. The St. Croix’s won the toss and had the Quicksteps strike first. Mr. Nelson led off the match for the Quicksteps with a solid hit and came around to tally an ace for his club. The strong hitters of the St. Croix’s were held down by the Quickstep defense through the first three innings, the score being one to nothing in favor of the Quicksteps.
In the St. Croix fourth inning, the ball became lively and the St. Croix batters found places where Quickstep fielders were not. The St. Croix’s tallied six aces in the fourth, two more in the fifth, one in the sixth and had seven more aces in their seventh. The final score of the match was the St. Croix’s 16 and the Quicksteps 1.
Mr. Cagley tallied three times, and Mr. Wittrock, Mr. Ebnet, Mr. Sjogren, Mr. Pfundstein and Mr. Peterson all tallied twice. Mr. Smith and Mr. Sjogren both ended up leaving the match because of injury. Mr. Smith with a knee and Mr. Sjogren with the heat of the afternoon.
Some very good defense was shown on both sides and the match was witnessed by many.
