Northfield: July 4, 2006 The captain's official game account: The Saint Croix’s defeat the Northfield Silver Stars on Independence Day The Saint Croix Base Ball Club traveled to the village of Northfield to cross bats with the Northfield Silver Stars on Independence Day. The patriotic feeling swept through the gathered crowd as Umpire Duane “Chairman” Thein called out “Striker to the Line.” The St.Croix’s were first to strike and the first two strikers went down to the hands of the Silver Stars defense. Then Dan “Basher” Cagley struck a mighty blow and made his first. The next St. Croix batter then was put out and the St. Croix’s tallied no aces. The Silver Stars Quickly tallied one ace in their first and another two in their second. Saint Croix pitcher, Brent “Skinny” Peterson, was injured while making a out on a fly ball, jamming his finger so badly that ice had to be brought in to help in the healing. Taking Mr. Peterson’s place was the St. Croix’s regular hurler, Don “Pieso” Hammer, who proved to be a fine pitcher and not allowing the Northfield nine another ace the entire match. The St. Croix’s finally were able to score two aces in the third even though the Northfield players were strong defensively. Jason “Redneck” Robinson, a new player to the St. Croix’s and Neal “Devil Dog” Rose, who is back from some major medical procedures, tallied the two aces for the St. Croix’s in their third. In the St. Croix’s sixth, two more tallies were added by Quentin “Rock” Wittrock and George “K-Man” Kimball. More aces would have surely been added but the quick and direct throw from the Northfield left fielder put Jody “Sidewinder” Ebnet out at home base. Mr. Rose added another tally in the St. Croix’s eighth and the final score being St. Croix’s 5 and the Northfield Silver Stars 3. The event was passed with great pleasure of the crowd and the clubs alike. The Umpire, Mr. Thein, did a pleasing job for both sides making sure his calls of “foul” rang through the St. Olaf campus for all to hear. Another match game will be played between the two nines on July 29th at the same field in Northfield at 1:30 pm. |
