Dakota City, Farmington: September 11, 2005 The captain's official game account: St. Croix's fall to the Northfield Silver Stars On a warm, windy September morning, the St. Croix's played the Northfield Silver Stars for the second time this season. The first meeting, on the Fourth of July, had the St. Croix's as the victors, but this day saw the Silver Stars extract revenge from that first meeting. Umpire Duane "Chairman" Thein called the match at 10 AM at Dakota Village in Farmington, Minnesota. The St. Croix's won the toss and sent the Northfield nine to strike first. The Northfield boys went right to work scoring three aces in their first. The St. Croix's countered with two aces of their own in their half of the inning. Northfield kept putting pressure on the St. Croix's defense, which made several costly errors that led to an ace in the Northfield second and again in their thirds. The St. Croix's, not doing well in the field, did come up with three aces in their third to tie the score at five apiece. The Silver Stars broke the tie in their sixth by tallying three times, again with help from errors of the St. Croix's defense. The St. Croix's continued to play hard, shutting out the Northfield boys from there on, but could only muster one more ace of their own in their eighth. The final being the Northfield Silver Stars 8 aces to the St. Croix's 6 aces. Among the St. Croix's Dan "Basher" Cagley scored two aces, and Quentin "Rock" Wittrock, Don "Pieso" Hammer, Jody "Sidewinder" Ebnet and Brent "Skinny" Peterson scored one ace each. Leslie "Hotdish" Kadish had the hot hand as the St. Croix's behind, grabbing several foul ticks as outs, which was the defensive highlight for the St. Croix nine. |
