St. Croix's defeat Fergus Falls American Legion Club in close match

On Saturday June 4th, the St. Croix Base Ball Club traveled to the city of Fergus Falls to have a match game of vintage base ball with the Fergus Falls American Legion Club at DeLagoon Park.

The weather was threatening all day and yet the rains held off. Fergus Falls won the toss and sent the St. Croix's to strike first. Umpire Mr. Duane "Chairman" Thein presided over the contest and yelled "Striker to the Line" to begin the match.

Filling in for the St. Croix's were a couple of friends from the Quickstep nine, and leading off the match was Paul "eightball" Harris who ended up at first base with an infield hit. The first four strikers for the St. Croix's reached base safely and by the end of the St. Croix's first, they had tallied four aces.

The Fergus Falls club did have some strong, young strikers, but most of their hits found their way into the hands of the St. Croix fielders. The St. Croix's tallied one more in their third and eighth, while the Fergus Falls club only managed to tally twice in their fourth. The final score being the St. Croix's 6 and the Fergus Falls American Legion Club 2.

For the St. Croix's, Dan "Basher" Cagley tallied three aces while Mr. Harris, Don "Pieso" Hammer and Jody "Sidewinder" Ebnet tallied one each. Mr. Arpi, also from the Quicksteps was the pitcher for the St. Croix's and Mr. Tholkes was the tally keeper.

After the match had concluded, the St. Croix's invited the crowd to come down onto the field and take a few swings and run the bases. The appreciative crowd came down and enjoyed the time until the heavens finally let go of the rain and concluded the play on the field.

The Fergus Falls club were good hosts to the St. Croix's and have invited them back for another match next year.
