Independence Day Match at Northfield

To celebrate Independence Day the Saint Croix Base Ball Club sojourned down to Northfield, the hamlet on the Cannon River, to play and early morning match against the Northfield Silver Stars.

The Saint Croix's appeared in force, numbering 14 players along with the most capable umpire Mr. Thein. The Northfield club also had many players and by match time many cranks from the area had gathered at the field.

The match started with the St. Croix Captain Mr. Peterson winning the coin toss and electing to send the Silver Stars to bat first. The first striker the Silver Stars sent to the bat was Mr. Silkey who struck a long fly over the head of the St. Croix's left fielder Mr. Cagley. Mr. Silkey made all four bases and the Northfield club took the early lead one to nothing.

The St. Croix's sent 10 players to the bat in their first, scoring five aces before the end of the inning. The Silver Stars added another ace with Mr. Richardson scoring in the 4th, but the St. Croix's matched that ace in their 5th.

The match was full of excellent defensive plays and the newest St. Croix player turned in the play of the match. Steven "Dude" Greenlow was coming from third to home base as the throw came in from the Northfield outfielder. The throw made the behind hit the ground to block the ball while Mr. Greenlow jumped over the player to avoid injury and made his ace.

There were no more aces tallied in the match and the final score being six aces for the St. Croix's and two for the Silver Stars.

The St. Croix's were happy to see several of their players making their first appearances of the season. Besides the new player Mr. Greenlow; Mr. Kimball, Mr. Grabistske and Mr. Rose where on the field for the first time this season.

We would like to thank the Northfield Silver Stars for a wonderful match and we look forward to another contest next season.
