Northfield Silver Stars "steal" away the match against the St. Croix's

The St. Croix Base Ball Club traveled to the village of Northfield on Saturday, September 6th to play a match game against the Northfield Silver Stars.

The match took place on the neighborhood fields of Seventh Street just outside the festivities taking place for the Defeat of Jesse James Days. It was in Northfield in 1876 that the citizens of Northfield stood up to the most famous outlaws of that time and ran them out of town. Three of the bandits, Cole, Jim and Bob Younger, were captured a couple weeks later and sentenced to life at the Stillwater Prison. Because of that event, the communities of Northfield and Stillwater will always be connected in the pages of history.

The match between the Silver Stars and the St. Croix's will go down as one of the most exciting events to take place in Northfield since that fateful day in 1876.

The St. Croix's were sent to strike first and enjoyed some heavy hitting, scoring three aces in their first. The Northfield club came right back with some fine hitting of their own and tallied five times to take a 5 to 3 lead after one inning.

The second inning saw the St. Croix tally four more times to take the lead in the match but the Northfield club tallied another two in their second to tie the score at seven aces apiece.

The St. Croix's continued some heavy hitting and tallied another four times in their third with several well placed hits. The Northfield club hit some long fly balls that resulted in their scoring three times which made the score 11 to 10 in favor of the St. Croix's.

After both clubs failed to score in the next two innings, the Silver Stars tallied twice in their sixth to take the lead 12 to 11. In the next inning, the seventh, the St. Croix's had two players cross home base and regained the lead 13 to 12.

The score stood 13 to 12 in favor of the St. Croix's until the last half of the ninth inning when the Northfield strikers hit several long fly balls just out of the reach of the St. Croix fielders. With the score tied, the St. Croix third baseman Mr. Wittrock threw out at home base a Northfield runner, but with two hands down and a Northfield runner at second base, another long fly ball scored the runner and the game was won by the home club.

It was all agreed that the match was played on both side of the ball. More matches between the two clubs will be scheduled for next year with the anticipation of more closely played matches in the future.

For the St. Croix's, Mr. Ebnet tallied four times, Mr. Sjogren and Mr. Cagley tallied three times each, Mr. Wittrock tallied twice and Mr. Jurek and Mr. Peterson tallied once.
